Zoo Basel was opened in July 1874 as a non-profit zoo and that currently it keeps about 6900 animals of 640 different species in an area of 13 hectares. They are member of 20 organizations including EAZA, WAZA and Swiss Zoos and participate in some breeding programs with which they got for example, the first indian rhino to born on a zoo worldwide in 1956. Achilla was Basel's first gorilla; she arrived in October 1948 from Cameroon and she was the mother of Goma, born in September 1959, and who became the first of her species to be born at Basel and in the whole Europe in a zoo. She is still alive today at this institution.

Gorilla's facility is a complex of three indoor rooms of 100 m2 in total provided with ropes, fake trees, swings and other objects such as buckets or pappers.

Basel Zoo keeps a group of eight gorillas:
