Located on the northeastern slope of Cavehill, Befast Zoolical Gardens opened its doors to the public in 1934 and houses a total of about 1200 animals of 140 different species on an area of 22 hectares, including primates, reptils, birds,  and other mammals. The zoo participates in over 90 European and international breeding programmes and is member of EAZA, WAZA or BIAZA between others. Their first gorillas were a copuple named Keke and Naomi, that arrived in August and September 1991 from Arnhem and Edinburgh respectively. They were the parents of the first baby born in Belfast, in January 1993, but badly died days after birth.
