Fundaçao Zoo-Botanica de Belo Horizonte is a complex dedicated to the care of both animals (zoo) and plants (botanical garden). The zoo opened in 1959 and is home to a big collection of animals from all the five continents; about 1500 animals representing 250 different species. Their first gorillas were Idi Amin and Dada, a couple that arrived in January 1975 directly from Africa. Althought Belo Horizonte Zoo imported in 2011 two new females from the Aspinall Fundation in hope to have babies, their male Idi Amin died in March 2012. Not long after that, in October 2013, silverback Leon arrived here and he sired the first baby gorilla of the park, born to mother Lou Lou in August 2014.
