Located 20 km away from Vejle, Givskud Zoo opened in August 1969 founded by Jacob Hansen. It is home to over than 120 species -such as elephants, giraffes, chimpanzees, lions or rhinoceros- and 1000 animals. Givskud got its first gorillas in November 1998 when Copenhagen Zoo closed. They were a family of western lowland gorillas composed by leader Samson and females Nille, Salome and Effie. Kidogo (currently at Krefeld), was the first baby to born at this zoo (parents are Minnie and Samson).

The facility for gorillas was built in 1998 to house the gorillas from Copenhagen Zoo. It has a big outdoor enclosure of 12000 square meters with grass and a river to separate gorillas from visitors.

Givskud Zoo keeps a group of six gorillas:
