Krefeld Zoo was founded in 1938 as the first zoo of the city after some animal shows in Krefeld in 1877 and 1914. It has an area of thirteen where they keep about 225 different animal species. This zoo is focused in showing great apes, tropical birds, african felines and some other savannah animals. Another important focus of Krefeld zoo is the flora they keep on each facility which answers to the plants we would see on each animal's habitat. Their first gorillas arrived at the zoo in 1975; a family of four gorillas (male Massa and females Mara, Boma and Tumba) arrived directly from Africa. Tumba was the first gorilla to give birth at the zoo when a baby that lived for five days was born in 1981.

The current facility for gorillas was built in 2011 and is part of a zone of the zoo called Affentropenhaus (Jungle monkeys house), where there are orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees. Gorillas are kept in two different groups: Massa with females Boma and Tumba, and Kidogo with females Oya and Muna. The first group is kept at the indoor stable and the second lives at the outdoor for breeding, although all facilities are connected to each others.
