Inaugurated in 1966, Zoo La Palmyre is located in the Côte de Beauté and is a 18 hectares natural park that keeps about 1600 animals of 130 different species including asian elephants, orangutans or rhinos. The zoo was opened from a trip of the owner to Kenya, from where he brought some animals and opened its doors exhibiting 60 animals.Their first gorilla was a one year old female called Martha and arrived to La Palmyre in June 1971 directly from Cameroon. She was the mother of Aline, who was the first baby gorilla to be born at this park. It happened in June 1978, and she was sired by King-Kong.

The facility, which was built in 2009, is a complex composed by four islands surrounded by water and destined to the keeping of the great apes of the zoo: chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans. At the moment, Zoo La Palmyre is keeping a single group, but on the moment when they had both a family and a bachelor groups, this species was occupying two of the islands, so they could all enjoy an outdoor enclosure.
