The Moscow Zoo is a 21,5 hectare zoo founded in 1864. In 1922, the ownership was transferred to the city of Moscow and has remained under Moscow's control ever since. The Moscow zoo has about 8270 animals representing about 970 species including marsupials, primates, insects and other kind of mammals. This zoo is member of its own country's organization EARAZA, plus EAZA and WAZA. In June 1972, Moscow imported its first gorilla, Batanga, a three years old female. Soon after that, she was joined by Metta, who arrived from Hamburg in October of the same year. In March 2008, Moscow saw its first gorilla birth, but unfortunately, it was a stillbirth. However, the following year, in April 2009, Viking was born to parents Kira and Vizuri.
