Placed in the town of Saarbrücken, Zoologischer Garten Saarbrücken is home to 1000 animals of 160 different species in an area of 15 hectares. It was opened in 1956 and keeps animals from Africa, South America and Madagascar, including giraffes, cheetah, chimpanzees, jaguars...the zoo as in general an old aged look, but there are many proyects and plans to rebuild its facilities into better modern ones. Their first gorilla arrived in August 1974 from Cameroon, a one year old male called Pongo that died there some years later. It's important to say that Saarbrücken never bred gorillas.
