Zoo Schmiding is in the middle of nowhere next to a small village, 10 km from the city of Wels in Upper Austria. Parts of the zoo area are covered with trees, the footpaths meander uphill and downhill. They have a little of everything in their animal collection, including tigers, cheetahs, Rothschild giraffes, zebras and rhinos, and a large variety of birds. Originally Schmiding had only birds on display, and their bird of prey aviary is the largest worldwide.

The enclosure for gorillas is called "Gorilla Bai" and was opened in 2004. It offers a naturalistic space of 1800m² with many hiding and resting places, climbing structures, large tree trunks and much more. There's also a large indoor bedroom with a lot of false rock and tree trunks to allow gorillas to climb.Schmiding1 Schmiding2 Schmiding3
