Opened in 2009, the Senkwekwe Orphan Mountain Gorilla Center is the only facility for orphaned mountain gorillas in the world and is located in the Virunga National Park (Democratic Republic of Congo). Each gorilla suffered a traumatic poaching experience, injuries from snares, and/or loosing their mothers in brutal killings. The Senkwekwe Center is associated with the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project - the Gorilla Doctors, a team of veterinarians caring for gorillas in the wild. Senkwekwe's first gorillas arrived when the center was built in 2009 - two females called Ndeze and Ndakasi, who were being held during two years in a house in the city of Goma and eventually confiscated by the rangers.

The gorillas are kept in a facility featuring a large forested outdoor enclosure of about 1600 m², surrounded by an electric fence, and a night house.
