After half a century of development the Shanghai Zoo has become one of the best ecological gardens in Shanghai. The zoo houses and exhibits more than 6000 animals, among which are 600 Chinese animals, that include the giant panda, golden snub-nosed monkey or South China tiger, and animals from other parts of the world such as chimpanzees, giraffes, polar bears or kangaroos. Their first gorilla, Bouleman, arrived to Shanghai in December 1993 from Rotterdam, and in April 2007, a reproductive group of one male and two females (Dango, Quenta and Astra) arrived from Rotterdam too. Two months later, Dango mated with Astra and in February 2008, Hai Bei was born, becoming the first baby gorilla ever for Shanghai Zoo.

The gorilla house contains two enclosures, one of them for the lonely silverback Bouleman and the other for the breeding group. There are three outdoor enclosures that contain artificial tree structures and hammocks of rope. The indoor enclosures are provided with strow, ropes and hammocks too.
