Taronga Zoo is located on the shores of Sydney Harbour in the suburb of Mosman. It was officially opened on 7 October 1916 and is managed by the Zoological Parks Board of New South Wales, under the trading name Taronga Conservation Society, along with its sister Zoo Dubbo's Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Divided into eight zoogeographic regions, the 21-hectare Taronga Zoo is home to over 2,600 animals of 340 species (most of them australian and asian animals), including sun bears, leopards, sea lions, koalas, kangaroos and many others. In June 1959, Sydney imported its first gorilla, King Kong, an eight years old male that arrived directly from Africa and in March 1998, Frala gave birth to the first baby gorilla of the park, who unfortunately died 23 days after birth.
