Being one of the oldest zoos in Japan, Ueno Zoo was inaugurated on March 20th 1882 and keeps a big collection of 3200 animals of 500 different species. They keep sumatran tigers, giant pandas, okapis or asian elephants.  Their first gorillas were a couple imported in November 1957 from Africa. They were one and tw0 years old and were called Tommy and N'Bul respectively.  Their first gorilla baby was a successfull birth. It happened in July 2000, when Momoko gave birth to Momotaro, who is currently the silverback and alfa male at Kyoto City Zoo.
