Founded and operated by the Hogle family, Utah's Hogle Zoo is a 42-acre (17 ha) zoo located in Salt Lake City, Utah. The zoo was opened on August 1st 1931 and it houses about 800 animals of 250 species from diverse ecosystems.  Utah's Hogle Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). The major exhibits at Hogle Zoo are Asian Highlands, Rocky Shores, Discovery Land and Elephant Encounter. Imported to Utah in June 1967, the couple of gorillas called Dan I and Elaine, were the first of their species to arrive to this institution. They came from Cameroon and they were the parents of Danielle, a female born on December 27th 1975, who, altough she was hand reared and died eleven months later, she became the first ever baby gorilla at Utah's Hogle Zoo.
