Werribee Open Range Zoo is a 225 hectares African themed zoo that is part of the Zoological Parks and Gardens Board or 'Zoos Victoria' which also includes Melbourne Zoo. It was opened in 1983 and is located on the Werribee River in Werribee Park. Visitors can take a safari bus tour to see hippos, zebras, ostriches, giraffes...it is a very recent zoo on the keeping of gorillas, as their first gorillas, males Motaba, Yadumu and Ghubari, arrived in October 2011 from their sister zoo in Melbourne. At the moment and since then, Werribee Zoo doesn't keep females.

Gorilla's enclosure was built in 2011 ago and is a 6000 m2 sanctuary that features wide-open spaces and climbing structures. There is no daytime indoor enclosure visible for visitors, but gorillas are given access to indoor areas off display in the late afternoons.
