Placed in the capital of Spain, Zoo Aquarium de Madrid is a big zoo that keeps one of the best animal collections in Europe. This zoo was opened in 1972 as the substitute of the old Casa de Fieras del Retiro, which was a tipical zoo that kept the animals in very small boxes. Madrid Zoo keeps currently an important collection of about 6000 animals from 500 different species, including panda bears, giant otters, white and indian rhinoceros...they also have many primates species: orangutans, gibbons, chimpanzees, colobos, mandrills, lemurs...Madrid Zoo got its first gorillas four years adter the opening of the park, in 1976, when two females, África and Gadi, arrived there from Gabon. Nadia and Bioko were the parents of the first gorilla born at Madrid in April 1988, a stillbirth.

Their gorillas exhibit has an outdoor prairie and an indoor house, plus five other non visible boxes that are used for quarantine or at night. It was renovated in 2002, when they replaced the iron and cement by false rock and grass and has different kind of enrichment such as ropes, termites and other toys.
